Distinguished and Famous people from South Coast

📚 Charmian Clift

Charmian Clift was born at Kiama in 1923 and grew up with the beach, a small valley and her parents' books as formative influences. She attended Kiama Public and Wollongong High schools and was already writing and illustrating poetry as a child. Later she became known for books about life in the Greek islands and for thoughtful, provocative newspaper essays. The celebrated literary partnership with George Johnston belonged to a much-travelled adult life, but Kiama remained her childhood landscape. A local heritage plaque in Hothersal Street recalls that beginning.

🎨 Arthur Boyd

Arthur Boyd encountered the Shoalhaven landscape in the early 1970s and subsequently acquired Riversdale and Bundanon with his wife Yvonne. The river country became a central source of inspiration, and he spent long periods painting outdoors to observe its changing moods. Geelong Gallery's Shoalhaven landscape records one aspect of this sustained artistic engagement. The landscape's prominence in his work arose from repeated observation and residence, not simply the reputation of a visitor with a famous surname. His local paintings connect a particular stretch of the South Coast with the broader history of Australian landscape art, giving the region a visible presence in public collections.

🌿 Guboo Ted Thomas

Yuin Elder Guboo Ted Thomas grew up at Wallaga Lake and became closely associated with the protection of Biamanga, also known as Mumbulla Mountain. He opposed logging and worked to secure recognition of its significance to Aboriginal people. His knowledge also contributed to the documentation of cultural sites along the South Coast. These campaigns connected detailed responsibilities for particular places with the wider land rights movement. He had earlier toured with the Wallaga Lake Gumleaf Band, adding a musical chapter to a life better known publicly for cultural leadership.
